Our Purpose

The Oregon Urological Society was founded in 1960 to improve the lives of Oregonians regardless of race, color, religion, gender identity, and sexual orientation. We are comprised of urologic surgeons, advanced practice providers, and practice administrators throughout the state. Together we strive to enhance the delivery and quality of urologic care through partnership, education and advocacy for our patients and members.

MedStaircase Scholarship

The OUS is a proud supporter of MedStaircase each year.

MedStaircase is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to increasing diversity in healthcare through mentorship, scholarship and education by elevating underrepresented groups along each step of their career path.

By partnering with individual physicians, larger physician groups and state medical societies (such as the Oregon Urological Society), MedStaircase first placed 17 college students from underrepresented groups into weeklong clinical shadowing clerkships during the summer of 2021. The organization grew that number to 58 students in 2022 and 69 in 2023. These students receive $1,200 scholarships to offset their costs of travel, room and board, and lost wages. Physician mentors invite the students into their workspaces, revealing the true life experiences of physicians and offering mentoring advice along the way. For these students, the clerkship ranged from career affirming to life changing.  The Oregon Urological Society feels this is a wonderful opportunity to further introduce our specialty to potential new future physicians.  Below are some of the m medical student comments:
● “You have made a big difference in the trajectory of my future and my understanding of medicine. Thank you so much!”
● “The most memorable experiences came from the conversations with the doctors themselves. Being able to hear their own personal journey and stories helped me gain a deeper understanding of what it takes to become a doctor.”
● “I will forever be grateful for this experience, and hopefully one day I will be able to pay it forward to the next generation of pre-meds.”

If you'd like to mentor or sponsor a student let us know and we will coordinate with the president of MedStaircase, Dr. Kate Ropp.
